752 people lost their jobs in 23 group layoffs last year in Iceland. The construction industry was again worst-hit and 69 percent of those laid off live in the capital region.

Iceland’s Directorate of Labour received notifications of group lay-offs from four companies and organisations in June. A total of 123 people were laid off in those four instances. Despite this, overall unemployment is down and the Directorate chief sounded a positive note.

Icelandic local governments will be asked to employ jobseekers and students to help people affected by the current Grimsvotn volcanic eruption. A similar project ran last year when the volcano under Eyjafjallajokull erupted.
