A new poll suggests that more than half of Icelanders do not want to join the European Union. The University of Iceland’s Social Science Research Institute polled 1,900 people and found that 54 percent are against assimilation into the 27-country bloc.

The EU plans to bring forward its decision on sanctions against Iceland and the Faroe Islands over the ongoing mackerel dispute. Irish officials say it will be difficult to discuss fishing in Iceland’s accession talks before the dispute is resolved.

The European Parliament yesterday ratified a committee report from February on Iceland’s EU accession talks. The report and parliamentary debate were generally positive on Iceland; although there is concern about the discussion surrounding the EU in the country.

This week’s Reykjavík mackerel fishing negotiations between Iceland and the Faroe Islands on one side and the EU and Norway on the other have ended without agreement and with the EU’s fishing chief blaming Icelandic and Faroese unwillingness to properly engage in negotiations.

Steingrímur J. Sigfússon, Iceland’s Minister of Fisheries, has told the media that he is optimistic for a positive outcome to new mackerel negotiations which began in Reykjavík yesterday.
