The undersea cable which Emerald Networks intends to lay between Ireland and the USA, with a connection to Iceland, will help Iceland create jobs in the creative sector and support environmentally friendly business, according to the company’s Icelandic rep, Þorvaldur Sigurðsson.

Some of the companies planning to store data at Verne Holding’s new Icelandic data centre, including the computer giant IBM, have cancelled their investments outright. At issue is (it is claimed) how badly the Icelandic finance ministry is dealing with technical difficulties surrounding VAT.

The Pirate Party, the youth branch of Sweden’s file-sharing and copyright reform advocacy group, has been given over a million kroner in state funding, according to The Local newspaper. Ung Pirat (Young Pirates) claims to be Sweden’s third-largest youth group, with some 4,800 members.

By fixing nearly 1,000 hotspots across Copenhagen, Denmark’s capital is set to become one of the few cities in the world providing free wireless Internet throughout the city. Anyone in the Danish capital with a laptop or compatible mobile phone will be able to access the Internet, according to The Copenhagen Post.
