Swedish winter set to be another record breaker for low temperatures

The weather in Sweden this winter looks set to be as cold and snowy as last year, according to Svenska Dagbladet. A weather phenomenon described as the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) will bring cold polar air in over Sweden. The weather phenomenon has been known by meteoroligists for a long time but it is not known exactly why it occurs.

Warm and almost snow free winters have been common in most parts of Sweden for a long time. However, the NAO phenomenon occured in Sweden last year and is due to make another appearance this coming winter.

According to Svenska Dagbladet, it is currently very cold all over Sweden and the low temperatures are expected to maintain over the weekend. The lowest temperature on Wednesday was minus 36.6 degrees Celcius, which was measured in Nikkaluokta in Northern Lapland. This is also the lowest temperature that has been measured in Sweden in November since 1995.

The snow and cold have already been causing problems over the last couple of days, especially in the southern and central parts of the country. A truck collided with a police car in Kalmar county in Smaland and a car and a bus collided close to Karlskrona injuring two people. A school bus also ran into a ditch in Lilla Edet but luckily no one was hurt.
