Leading Icelandic conceptual artist to exhibit in Sweden

An exhibition of Icelandic artist Hreinn Fridfinnsson’s work will open at Malmö Konsthall gallery on 15 February in Sweden, reports e-flux.com.

The exhibition, which will run until 27 April 2008, celebrates the art of one of the top conceptual artists in Iceland. Fridfinnsson is known to use mundane subject matter and common materials, infusing them with an unexpected depth and lyricism. Using photography, sculpture, drawing and installation, the artist explores a wide range of ideas with a light, simple touch.

Four decades of Fridfinnsson’s work will be represented at the exhibition, with the natural world serving as the centerpiece. His use of landscape stems from a childhood on a farm in the Icelandic countryside, from which it is impossible to separate himself he has said.

Fridfinnsson became a known presence in the Icelandic avant-garde world after he joined other artists in Reykjavik to found the group SÚM in 1965. He moved to Amsterdam soon after and has been based there since.
