Four stranded killer whales die in North Iceland

The Icelandic rescue team was unable to save four out of five killer whales that had washed ashore on a beach in Heiðarhöfn on Langanes peninsula yesterday. Only the smallest of the five sea mammals successfully regained the ocean, according to police chief Jón Stefánsson.

Iceland’s opposition wins election, Social Democrats swept out of Parliament

Iceland’s Centre-right opposition parties return to power in Iceland following Saturday’s parliamentary election. The Independence Party (Sjáfstæðisflokkurinn, conservative) and the Progressive Party (Framsóknarflokkurinn, centre-right) get 19 seats each in the 63-seat parliament, and are expected to form a coalition government.
