The two have been a couple for almost eight years and it is believed that the reason that they have not been engaged before is that it would have been considered inappropriate for the princess to be engaged before her older sister, Crown Princess Victoria. Crown Princess Victoria confirmed her engagement to Daniel Westling in February.

According to the Swedish constitution, any engagement of a member of the royal family needs the approval of the government. Dagens Nyheter reports that the government, after an unscheduled government assembly, today decided to approve the engagement and wish the young couple the best of luck.

Princess Madeleine (27) is the Duchess of Halsingland and Gastrikland. She has a university degree in Fine Arts, Ethnology and Modern History. Jonas Bergstrom (30) works as an Associate Lawyer with a law firm in Stockholm.
