Both of Iceland’s ruling coalition parties voted to pass the government’s new fisheries bill at their meetings yesterday. The bill will therefore be put to Alþingi for debate later this week.

The Icelandic Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture, Jón Bjarnason, may lose his cabinet position for having prepared and made public a controversial new bill without consulting the rest of the government. The lack of comment from both coalition party leaders is not being interpreted as positive for Jón’s future.

The seas off the Westfjords region of Iceland have been teeming with an unusual number of fish in recent weeks and the town of Bolungarvik has not processed greater volumes of catch in over ten years.
