Icelandic President visits Qatar

After spending four days in Qatar, the President of Iceland, Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, and his delegation bid farewell to Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani at Doha International Airport.

During the visit, Grimsson and his delegation visited the fast-growing Ras Laffan Industrial City (RLC) built in the dessert on the north eastern coast of Qatar. The Icelandic delegation was guided on a tour of the area which included the RasGas facilities and award-winning port area.

Following the visit, Grimsson said he was impressed with the area’s recent developments. “The visionary leadership of HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani has seen Qatar grow by leaps and bounds over the last few years,” he said.

In addition to commercial and political discussions, the Icelandic President also had time for some cultural activities. Grimsson and his wife, Dorrit Mousselef, spent an evening touring Souq Waqif, one of the country’s largest markets.

The couple visited many sections of the maze-like market, browsing the selections of antiques, traditional clothing, perfumes, textiles, hunting tools and historic photographs. At a shop selling Arabian swords, the Icelandic President was given a dagger.
