Today is the official launch of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety campaign. This initiative is to span from 2011 to 2020 in order to create awareness for road safety and the results of road traffic accidents including spinal cord jury.
Over the next decade, the United Nations will be urging countries worldwide to encourage the improvement of traffic issues, reduce speed limits, increase the use of road safety equipment and better road accident response times.
At 10:30 this morning, the Icelandic Automobile Association (FIB), the Icelandic Ministry of the Interior, the Icelandic ministry of Welfare, and the President of Iceland held a press conference to discuss the importance of road safety and the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety campaign both internationally and in Iceland.
In light of the campaign, the Icelandic Government has decided to exercise its political influence to help find a cure for spinal cord injury. Spinal cord injury is one of the hardest challenges facing medical science, and just under half the population of people paralyzed by spinal cord injury has been as a result of road traffic accidents.
