Around 21,000 foreign tourists left Iceland through Keflavík International Airport in December; which is about 11 percent more than in December 2010.
Overall last year 541,000 foreign tourists left Iceland through its biggest airport; and that is a record figure and a full 18 percent higher than 2010. The record year before 2011 was 2008, when 473,000 foreign tourists flew out of Keflavík.
The first ten months of last year were all record breaking months; but November and December were not record breaking. There were more foreign tourists leaving through the airport in December in both 2007 and 2008.
Concurrent to the airport-wide figures, Icelandair has also published its 2011 passenger numbers. The airline says it transported 1.75 million passengers in 2011; which is a fifth more than the year before. Icelandair has never transported more people in one year and its seat usage has also never been better, Vísir.is reports.
