Dog leash mum killer sentenced to life

A 33-year-old Swedish woman who strangled her mother with a dog lead after killing her friend with a piece of wire has been sentenced to life in jail.

In what was described in court as a “bizarre killing”, the woman’s friend was first found dead after being strangled with wire in Varnamo, western Sweden, last December. The death was first assumed to be a suicide until suspicions were raised when the woman’s mother was also found dead two months later, this time strangled with plastic bags and a dog leash.

A district court initially freed the accused over the killings but, despite the dissension of one judge, an appeals court found her guilty on Tuesday, December 28. The woman denied both murders but her initial explanation that the deaths were suicides was rejected by the Swedish Social Welfare Board.

Both women were killed in a way to suggest that they took their own lives but the accused later gave police details such as that her mother had been tied up. She was, however, unable to give any further explanation of the deaths.
