Police chief slammed after black hooker joke

A Swedish police chief has defended his decision to tell a joke about a black prostitute in front of 128 colleagues.

At a police association meeting last week, Ljungby police chief Hans Qvant took to the stage and cracked a gag about a black prostitute who asks a man if he wants to go home with her and have sex. The punch line of the joke comes when the man asks the prostitute: “What am I going to do in Africa?”

In an interview with Sveriges Radio Gothenburg, Mr Qvant said he was simply trying to entertain the crowd by dressing up and telling jokes. “There was no entertainment in connection with the dinner at the end of the congress. And I have always thought that it was fun to imitate,” he said.

Not everyone was supportive of Qvant’s controversial choice of material however. Lena Nitz, chairwoman of the Swedish Police Federation, is part of a team elected to tackle questionable police ethics.

“I thought that this was totally unacceptable,” she told the broadcaster. “People can take offence and several came to me the day after who were upset.” Nitz also confirmed that she has spoken to Mr Qvant about the embarrassing incident.

Mr Qvant was apparently surprised by the angry reactions but has tentatively apologised for causing any offence. “It is possible that not everyone has the same sense of humour as I and most people have, that is up to them,” he said. “The joke is not playing on her colour, but his stupidity,” he added.
