Continued Chinese support promised for Iceland

Chinese authorities intend to make a concerted effort to increase imports from Iceland within the framework of the currency swap agreement the two countries’ central banks signed this summer. This promise came during a meeting between Icelandic President Olafur Ragnar Grimsson and Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao today.

A statement from the office of the Icelandic President said that geothermal energy projects were discussed in particular, with the Chinese PM celebrating the good results achieved so far from an Icelandic geothermal project in Shaanxi; and also the contract signed yesterday for similar projects in Inner Mongolia. The President has also been talking to authorities in Yunnan about possible Icelandic involvement in the geothermal industry there.
