A new website allowing distance-learning of the Icelandic language has been officially opened by the Vigdis Finnbogadottir Institute of Foreign Languages.
The website is called icelandiconline.is and is open to internet users everywhere.
Vigdis Finnbogadottir, former president of Iceland and the world’s first democratically elected female head of state, opened the new website at the Nordic House in Reykjavik yesterday. The language learning website is aimed more at adults than children and includes a special course for foreigners who are living in an Icelandic-speaking environment.
The website is interactive and teaching takes place in Icelandic. 16,000 people were already registered with the site before its official unveiling and visitors to the new website number over 600 active users per day.
