Icelandic president sends condolences to Russian counterpart

Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, President of Iceland, yesterday sent his Russian counterpart, Dimitry Medvedev a message of support and condolence for the damage being wrought on Russia by forest fires. At least 52 rescue workers and civilians have died in the fires, Visir.is reports.

As well as the loss of dozens of Russian lives, the ongoing disaster is claiming huge swathes of forest land, whole villages and even a military base.

Russia is experiencing its worst heatwave since records began and smoke from the fires has engulfed the capital, Moscow. Fire fighters have yet to bring the fires under control.
