The new Reykjavik City ruling coalition between the Best Party and the Social Democrats has decided to offer outgoing mayor Hanna Birna Kristjansdottir the position of President of the City Council.
Hanna Birna is an elected councillor for the Independence Party, which lost a lot of support in the recent local elections. However, she remains a popular figure and was well-liked as mayor.
Both the Independence Party and the Left Greens are discussing a new offer for better co-operation between the opposition and the majority parties. The Best Party believes that a united council will serve Reykjavik best, RUV reports.
Despite these recent developments, the basic structure of the new city council is clear: the Best Party leader Jon Gnarr will be mayor and Dagur B. Eggertsson, the city leader of the Social Democrats, will be the President of the Reykjavik City Executive Committee.
