Iceland has grounds for cutting diplomatic ties with Israel, according to a parliamentary committee which met yesterday.
As reported yesterday on IceNews, the Althingi committee on foreign affairs has met several times over the last two days to discuss the attack on a flotilla of Gaza-bound aid ships by Israeli forces with the loss of at least ten lives.
The committee’s final conclusion was that there are grounds for Iceland to cut diplomatic ties with Israel over the incident.
The committee’s secondary recommendations were for Minister for Foreign Affairs Ossur Skarphedinsson to arrange a visit to the Gaza Strip and for Iceland to step up aid provisions to Gaza.
The committee does not have direct power, but government ministers are obliged to listen and respond to parliamentary committees’ recommendations appropriately.
