White power movement resurgent in Sweden?

violence1The Expo Foundation’s first annual report on the white power movement in Sweden has revealed that the faction is undergoing resurgence, with extremist right-wing organisations becoming more active in recent times.

The report revealed that last year there were 39 active white power groups in Sweden, 25 of which had been created in 2007 or 2008. “This is a movement which saw an increase in activity in 2008,” said one of the report’s authors Kenny Hjalte in The Local.

Publisher of a magazine by the same name, The Expo Foundation was created in 1995 in order to follow racist trends and right-wing extremists in Sweden. The Expo report further found that white power groups carried out 1,946 actions in 2008, an increase of around 800 from the previous year. Dissemination of propaganda was the leading activity followed by various demonstrations and lectures.

Nearly all of the activity can be traced to four organisations: the Swedish Resistance Movement, the National Socialist Front or People’s Front, the Nordic Union and its associated Resistance and Info 14 and its network of Free Nationalists.

“The biggest apparent change is the activist groups of the type created by Info 14, for example, and which are the most dynamic independent groups we see today. It’s a new form of activism,” claimed Hjalte, who added that 2009 has seen a fracturing amongst the white power scene.

“Previously they’ve had large National Day events which were cancelled this year and these organizations held their own events around the country,” Hjalte concluded.
