Fresh home from the European Women’s European Cup in Finland, the Icelandic ladies’ team took to the qualifying for the next World Cup in fine style yesterday, beating Estonia 12-0.
The Icelanders’ trip to Finland marked the first time a senior Icelandic national team had competed in a World or European championship finals. As satisfying as that was, the players were not particularly satisfied with their performance once in Finland.
That all went out of the window last night in Reykjavik when the team put 12 past Estonia in their World Cup qualifier – beating the previous 10 goal record (against Poland) for an Icelandic national football victory.
The next FIFA Women’s World Cup will be held in Germany in 2011.
