Kaupthing secrecy injunction lifted

ruv_logoThe injunction imposed on Icelandic national broadcaster RUV over revelations in the leaked Kaupthing loan book has been lifted. The issue was re-examined today by the Reykjavik District Commissioner at the request of the broadcaster.

The Commissioner acted on behalf of Kaupthing on Saturday a few minutes before the main evening news on television to prevent RUV showing the document discussed here on IceNews.

The decision attracted strong criticism from politicians and the public, as well as the Journalists’ Union of Iceland and the RUV News Broadcasters’ Association – both of which protested the move.

The Old Kaupthing resolution committee and the leaders of New Kaupthing have now agreed not to appeal the latest decision, RUV reports. Finnur Sveinbjornsson, director of New Kaupthing, said the authorities should now re-examine banking secrecy provisions and enact a law the banks can rely on.
