Iceland’s Independence Party announced this weekend that they want the government to work on changing Iceland’s currency to the euro. The party wants the government to work on the issue in co-operation with the IMF. The press statement urges that the Independence Party does not support unilateral adoption of the euro.
The Independence Party press release says that the party’s Europe Report can only be considered a progress report due to the short timescale their Europe committee had to work on it.
It is important for the committee to continue its work after the elections with the participation of all political parties and stakeholders, the statement says.
“(The report concludes) that the best option is to commence a closer relationship with the European Union and economic stability could be achieved by taking up the single European currency, the euro.”
