Copenhagen gets radical new mega-mall

sale1Copenhagen is planning to set another Nordic record by hosting Scandinavia’s largest shopping centre – despite the fact that Field’s is already in Copenhagen and already claims to be Scandinavia’s biggest. The new shopping concept will be built by Belgium’s Uplace development company.

The Copenhagen Post says the new Uplace mall will encompass 190,000 sq. m., and focus on the experience of shopping more than the specific products on sale. The mall itself is something of a radical new concept, complete with a wooded park, kids’ play area, and ‘interactive shops’.

Customers will be able to visit a store where they can design their own shoes, for example, which is the driving theme behind Uplace’s concept of promoting the process of shopping above the actual products.

Lorin Parys, the head of Uplace’s operations, told the Copenhagen Post: “People often say they don’t have time to shop. That’s not true. People love to shop, but they also need time to be parents, exercise and be good employees. We want to change shopping from being something functional to being an experience for people that compliments the rest of their lives.”

Uplace has big plans to open its radical style of mega-mall all across Europe. The first Uplace mall, which is presently under construction, will open in Brussels in 2012, with other malls slated for development in Paris, Munich, Milan, Madrid and Geneva.
