Sweden drafts anti-terrorism plan

Despite its global reputation as a peaceful country and international mediator, Sweden has formulated a strategy to counter possible terrorism, reports UPI.

In an article published this month, Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt and Justice Minister Beatrice Ask admitted that the risk of encountering a terrorist threat in Sweden was quite low. However, their statement said that it “would be naive to assume that what has happened in neighbouring countries can’t also happen here.”

The proposed anti-terrorism plan offers recommendations which go straight to the root of the problem. It suggests social programmes designed to address discrimination and to avoid the conditions that lead to feelings of resentment, which in turn could lead to political militarisation in Sweden.

According to the ministers, a feeling of social exclusion “always runs the risk of serving as a breeding ground for violent extremism.”

The plans also call upon Sweden to fight terror on an international scale and join forces with other countries on the issue.
