Swedish Icehotel celebrates 18 years

The famous ICEHOTEL in Sweden marked its 18th year of business this year. The hotel, which is made of ice, is situated in the town of Jukkasjärvi in Lapland, northern Sweden.

The hotel is currently constructing 80 more rooms to be finished by the beginning of the new year. Guests can choose to stay in an ice room at between minus 5 and 8 degrees centigrade, or in a normal ‘warm’ room.

The ICEHOTEL has steel structures forming its base, which are then covered with snow and ice to complete the framework. Every year, various artists and designers add their own touch to the decor.

This year, artists involved in the design included Ben Rousseau, Sakai Hiroyoshi, Shingo Saito, Laura and Lele Trabb and Kestutis Musteikis. The designers have helped create the Art Suites – 10 special rooms that are currently open at the hotel.

Activities for visitors also include Arctic snowmobile safaris and visits to the Esrange Space Center.
