A total of 22 Icelandic MPs have signed an Amnesty International letter to prohibit illegal custody and other human rights violations in the US “War on Terror”, reports Iceland Review.
The MPs represented every political party in Iceland, although 41 MPs did not sign.
Amnesty International released the following statement in the Icelandic paper Morgunbladid: “Amnesty International’s goal is to have 1,000 MPs from every corner of the world to support the plan. The support of the Icelandic MPs is therefore important in the fight against human rights violations in the ‘War on Terror’ and the Icelandic branch [of Amnesty International] is thankful for their support.”
The statement continues to reveal that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that several suspects have been transported to other countries for interrogation and torture through Icelandic airspace.
“The Icelandic branch of Amnesty International believes it is time that Icelandic authorities and the entire parliament declare against ‘disappearances,’ torture and other crude human rights violations that are taking place in the so-called ‘War on Terror’ and demand that US authorities stop illegal custody,” the statement asserted.
