Glitnir Reykjavik Marathon draws over 11,300 runners

Glitnir Reykjavik MarathonA record number of participants from all around the world took part in the 2007 Glitnir Reykjavik Marathon in Iceland. Participation in the marathon increased by 10% this year with 11,342 runners taking part in five categories of marathon sponsored by Glitnir Bank.

The full marathon, half marathon and 10 kilometre race were all held on Saturday 18th August in Reykjavik with near-perfect weather conditions. Simon Tonui from Kenya won the men’s full marathon while Sarah Kathryn from Canada won the women’s.

The 2007 Reykjavik marathon was sponsored by leading Nordic financial group Glitnir which has its headquarters in Iceland. Glitnir also supported the Copenhagen Marathon in May and will be the main sponsor of the Oslo Marathon taking place in Norway on 20th September 2007.

Over the years, Glitnir employees, including Chairman of Glitnir Thorsteinn M. Jonsson, have been very active in supporting cancer charities by running in the Glitnir marathons. In May Glitnir donated over DKK 400,000 to the Danish Cancer Society under the Copenhagen Marathon theme ‘Race Against Cancer’.
