At the IIHF World Ice Hockey Champions, Sweden was left red-faced, going down 3-2 to an unfancied Switzerland in the opening games last weekend. It was a disappointing start for the hosts in front of a home crowd.

A British comedy promoter and “Arctic virgin” lost his life on Sunday, shortly after he and two friends began a 644kms trek across Greenland’s ice cap. The other two men on the expedition are recovering from shock and frostbite in hospital.

The Finnish tennis team left fans a game short during their match with Ireland last Sunday, after abandoning the court with the score 3-1. Finland refused to play the final ‘dead rubber’ once the outcome had been decided, with the home side winning a third.

International goalkeeper David James has signed for Icelandic team Íþróttabandalag Vestmannaeyja (ÍBV) as a player/coach and will now play his football in Iceland. Ski centres across Finland are pleased to see cold winter conditions continue, as it has kept their slopes in peak condition for longer. The cold evening temperatures, alongside the bright sunny spells the country has been enjoying in the daytime, has increased the popularity of many Finnish ski slopes.
