Yesterday, residents of Reykjavik woke up to heavy snowfalls in combination with strong gusts of wind, leaving high banks of snow on sidewalks and black ice on roads before snowplows could get to work.

The Finnish capital has seen one of its most gloomy winters on record. According to the latest figures from the Finnish Meteorological Institute, whose readings were taken at Helsinki’s Vantaa Airport, only about 50 hours of sunlight have been seen in Helsinki since the beginning of December.

Temperatures are likely to drop even further below normal next month throughout the Nordic region, according experts from Weather Services International (WSI). WSI officials said that a high-pressure pattern is to persist over the arctic through to February, continually pushing frigid, dry air southward over Scandinavia, as well as toward Russia, the Baltic states and Britain.
