A British comedy promoter and “Arctic virgin” lost his life on Sunday, shortly after he and two friends began a 644kms trek across Greenland’s ice cap. The other two men on the expedition are recovering from shock and frostbite in hospital.

A recent report of Cairn Energy PLC’s offshore oil drilling and exploration programme off the shores of western Greenland said the company greatly underestimated how much oil would flow into the waters during a severe oil spill.

Greenland’s new premier, Aleqa Hammond, made her first official trip to Denmark on 15 April. However, one in three people who live on this gigantic northern island under Danish home rule said Greenland should have closer ties with its even larger neighbour to the west.

The notorious file sharing site The Pirate Bay tried changing its virtual domain to Greenland in a bid to thwart efforts to close it down. The overnight switch to a .gl domain name was necessary after it became apparent its .se domain might soon be seized by Swedish officials.

The incoming government lead by Aleqa Hammond in Greenland will put the brakes on further offshore drilling for oil. Licences for 11 new blocks in Northeast Greenland, said to contain more than 30 billion barrels in reserves, will not be handed out after the new administration takes office on April 5th.
