Finnish children enjoy better well being than almost all other countries in the developed world, according to a UNICEF report recently published. Comparing 29 ‘advanced economies’, Finland ranked fourth after the Netherlands, Norway and Iceland. However, the country ranked even better on some specific criteria.

New concert venue in Hämeenlinna, Finland

Plans to construct a 100,000 person Event Park in Hämeenlinna are going ahead despite waiting for a environmental permit to be approved. Finland’s largest ever festival park, the Kantola Events Facility, will go ahead on the assumption of permission being granted by the Uusimaa Economic, Transportation and Environmental Development Centre (Ely-keskus).

Finland clamp down on under-age drinking

Three people who bought alcohol on behalf of Finnish under-age drinkers have each been given tough sentences by the Vantaa district court. The leader of the trio, a 59-year-old man, has been charged with tobacco sales crimes, weapons crimes, alcohol crimes and tax fraud.

Finnish-Russian cultural centre set to open in Helsinki

Officials in Helsinki are to open a cultural centre in the capital designed to help Russian speakers better integrate into Finnish society. Chairman Janna Puumalainen said on behalf of the group setting up the centre, “The meeting place will offer exhibitions, discussion events, films, poetry readings and other literary evenings.

Finland rents up nearly 4 per cent

Rental rates for flats in Finland have risen significantly in recent years, new data has shown. According to the latest figures from Statistics Finland, flats throughout the country saw a year-on-year increase of 3.7 per cent in 2012.
