Icelandic tax payers are set to bear the heavy burden of recapitalising the government employees’ pension fund (LSR). Billions of extra krónur are needed by the fund over the coming decades so it can stand up to its responsibilities.

Iceland’s pension funds were given the opportunity to buy a quarter share in HS Orka from Canada’s Magma Energy. They have now decided to investigate the potential deal with a view to accepting it.

Iceland’s pension funds lost at least ISK 70 billion (USD 621.3 million) in the banking crisis. The Icelandic parliament investigating committee believes the funds had been hoping to stimulate growth and confidence with their investments at the time.
