A summit of Inuit leaders focussing on resource development in the Arctic is urgently needed, according to the conclusions of the 11th Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC) conference in Greenland. Greenland celebrated the beginning of Self Rule from Denmark yesterday. While differences on a daily basis will be few, the move gives Greenland a renewed sense of nationhood and gradually increasing control over its own destiny, including policing, justice and 50 percent of energy and mineral revenues.

Greenland’s new premier, Kuupik Kleist may have managed to form a three party coalition agreement in just six days (compared to the expected 45) but there is still no official confirmation of who the cabinet ministers will be.

In an strong show of support for the referendum on self-rule last week, Greenlanders voted three-to-one in favour of beginning the process of severing its historic ties with Denmark and striking out on its own. Around 72 per cent of the island’s eligible voters took part, a surprisingly high turnout for the world’s largest island.
