The European Parliament yesterday ratified a committee report from February on Iceland’s EU accession talks. The report and parliamentary debate were generally positive on Iceland; although there is concern about the discussion surrounding the EU in the country.

New ‘mackerel war’ negotiations taking place in Iceland

Steingrímur J. Sigfússon, Iceland’s Minister of Fisheries, has told the media that he is optimistic for a positive outcome to new mackerel negotiations which began in Reykjavík yesterday.

Dutch, German and British loan to Iceland

A spokesman for the Dutch Ministry of Finances said earlier today that Dutch authorities will grant Iceland up to 1.3bn euro, MBL reported. The condition for the loan is that the money is used for paying IceSave depositors.

IMF: fiscal stability imperative for Iceland

The press conference held by the IMF delegation in Iceland this afternoon stressed the point that presently data is being gathered to evaluate the situation. The Icelandic government also has to decide whether the conditions of the IMF are acceptable.

Sigurdsson, the Minister of Trade, Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir, the Minister of Education, Science and Culture, Arni Mathiesen, the Finance Minister and Ossur Skarphedinsson, the Minister of Industry have just left the venue where Geir H. Haarde, the Icelandic Prime Minister is leading negotiations with the representatives of the IMF.
