Former Icelandic PM’s trial: Day Six

Yesterday was the sixth and penultimate day of witness testimony at the court case against former Icelandic Prime Minister Geir H. Haarde. Six people testified at the Cuture House in Reykjavík and one testified by telephone from Canada. Today is the final day of witnesses.

Ingibjorg Solrun Gisladottir still has brain tumour

The former foreign minister and ex-leader of Iceland’s Social Democrats, Ingibjorg Solrun Gisladottir has revealed that she still has a brain tumour diagnosed in 2008. She was this week spared from the Landsdomur high court; but former PM Geir Haarde will face negligence charges.

The head of the United Nations Human Rights Council is likely to request that former Icelandic foreign minister Ingibjorg Solrun Gisladottir head up an investigation into the Israeli attack on Gaza-bound aid ships.

Ingibjorg Solrun Gisladottir quits

Ingibjorg Solrun Gisladottir, former Icelandic Foreign Minister and current MP and chairman of the Social Democrats, announced this afternoon that she is to leave politics altogether. Gisladottir invited the media to a press conference at her home on Nesvegur shortly before 17.00 to announce her decision.

IMF warning in April

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) sent a message to the Icelandic government in April last year saying how important it was to react effectively against the problems of having a too-big banking sector with very light regulation in the country.

Head of Iceland’s Social Democrats and former Foreign Minister Ingibjorg Solrun Gisladottir has confirmed that she intends to run for parliament again at the upcoming elections in April.

New Icelandic government under negotiation

Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, the President of Iceland, asked Ingibjorg Solrun Gisladottir, the leader of the Social Democrats, and Steingrimur J. Sigfusson, leader of the Left Green Party, to discuss together the formation of a minority coalition government between their two parties. The President said he had asked Gisladottir to chair the talks.

Protesters pelt Iceland Foreign Ministry

A group of ten to 15 protesters, mostly wearing masks, gathered outside the Icelandic Foreign Ministry on Friday afternoon and pelted the building with balloons filled with red paint.
