It came to light over the weekend that for at least 13 years the Icelandic brewing and food supplies company Ölgerðin Egill Skallagrímsson has been selling industrial salt to food production companies to put in their products.

Because of yesterday’s bad-weather-induced power cuts in Iceland production at both the Elkem ferrosilicon plant and the Norðurál aluminium smelter at Hvalfjörður in the west ground to a halt. It is thought the cuts cost the companies tens-of-millions of krónur.

Björgólfur EA 312, an Icelandic freezing trawler, returned to its home port of Dalvík this week after a trip propelled by Icelandic-made fuel, called Lífsdísill (life diesel) – made from fats and oils wasted in food production.

Iceland is producing twice the amount of electricity today as it was at the time of the millennium celebreations, just eleven years ago. The country could well go on to double present-day energy generation as well.
