President of Iceland Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson has called the National Council together this morning for its traditional New Year’s meeting. The Council is made up of the President and the government cabinet. It is widely expected that the sacking of two ministers will be announced after today’s meeting.

The Icelandic Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture, Jón Bjarnason, may lose his cabinet position for having prepared and made public a controversial new bill without consulting the rest of the government. The lack of comment from both coalition party leaders is not being interpreted as positive for Jón’s future.

(Press release from the Icelandic government): “The worst is over,” said Icelandic Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir today, “and now the clean-up can begin. Our geoscientists say that the eruption is waning day by day and that the problems arising in our neighbouring countries as a result of volcanic ash should be resolved quickly.”
