Concerns over market for Icelandic whale meat in Japan

It is out of the question that the Icelandic government is in a position to supplement the whaling industry with the extra hundreds of millions of kronur it has cost and continues to cost the nation every year. Whaling season in Iceland “a success”


whale meatIceland’s whaling quota this year is coming close to being reached, but according to Managing Director of the Association of Minke Whalers Gunnar Jonsson, reaching the quota is not the goal. The quote was set for 200 minke whale and 150 fin whales. At the moment, a quarter of the total quota has been met including 50 percent of the fin whale quota. That means 46 minke whales and 64 fin whales have been caught. 110 whales in total have been captured this season. Read the full story

Norway calls off whale hunt this year


sperm-whale1Norway’s main fish sales group has decided to call off the annual whale hunt along the country’s coasts this year due to a low demand for whale meat. The organisation that handles the sale and distribution of the whale meat, Norges Rafisklag, claims there simply aren’t enough customers to warrant continuing the hunt. Read the full story

Greenland asks to raise whale-hunting quota


humback-oliAs the International Whaling Commission (IWC) met in Portugal recently, Denmark requested on the behalf of Greenland to include 10 humpback whales in its annual hunting quota. Greenland presently has hunting quotas for minke and fin whales, but the meat obtained from these species is significantly less than the amount allowed by the IWC. Read the full story

Sale of Icelandic whale meat in turmoil

Greenland lands its first native whale in 37 years


sperm-whaleIt’s been 37 years coming, but a Greenlandic bowhead whale has been hunted and caught near the town of Qeqertarsuaq, thus finally filling its special quota to catch a single whale. In 1973, the historic Greenland whaling town was granted permission to hunt a single whale in commemoration of the town’s 200th anniversary. Read the full story
