Mugison adds more free concerts to create Christmas round-Iceland tour


People love a freebie — especially when it is a concert by one of Iceland’s biggest contemporary music stars. After “selling out” of free tickets to his concert at the 1,600-seat Eldborg concert hall at Reykjavík’s Harpa concert and conference centre, Mugison added two other free concerts, which also “sold out” in record time. Now the artist has announced five more free concerts elsewhere in Iceland before Christmas. Read the full story

Icelandic municipality escapes fines for unclean incinerator

Giant undersea heat pump for Icelandic island town?


As strange is it sounds, there is no usable geothermal hot water for residents on Iceland’s volcanic island of Heimaey. After the famous volcanic eruption on the island in 1973 returning evacuees were able to set up geothermal space heating for their homes from the hot lava — but that time is long over. The lava heat plant was decommissioned in 1988 after the ground went cold. Read the full story

New Iceland ferry port experiencing teething problems


Herjolfur, the ferry between the Westman Islands and mainland Iceland, can no longer sail to the brand new, specially constructed Landeyjahofn Harbour, according to the boat’s captain. The harbour is too shallow due to accretion of sand and volcanic ash. Read the full story

New family moves onto Surtsey Island, no parties allowed


golden-ploverA golden plover with four eggs was found by an expedition to Surtsey island off the south coast of Iceland this week in order to set up a permanent unmanned weather station. Normally only scientists are permitted to step foot on the island a few days a year. Read the full story

Strange behaviour: herring in Icelandic harbours


herringHerring have been found in great numbers in and around Hafnarfjordur Harbour in recent weeks. The herring seem to be swimming in and out of the harbour on a whim and seafarers report the fish seem to be schooling in greater numbers inside the harbour than outside.

Mbl.is reports that a great number of seagulls, cormorants and other sea birds are following the herring and are the best indicator of the fishes’ current location in the harbour. Read the full story
