A 1-0 Danish victory over their Nordic neighbours Sweden has left the Swedes in peril of failing to qualify for the 2010 World Cup football finals in South Africa. The Dutch and Icelandic men’s football teams will clash again in Reykjavik on 6th June after an October meeting in Rotterdam which Holland won 2-0. The Reykjavik match is the second leg in the countries’ qualification clash for the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa.
As runaway group leaders, the Dutch are probably already packing their bags for South Africa; but third place Iceland still have a chance to join them and will be pushing their visitors hard in June. Read the full story

Sweden’s Football Association has announced it intends to team up with Norway to make a joint bid to host the European Championship in 2016. The European continent’s premier football competition has only been held in Scandinavia once, when Sweden hosted the event in 1992. Read the full story

Norway got a pleasant surprise when its national football team beat Germany 1-0 in a friendly match last week. It’s been 73 long years since Norway last upset the Germans on the football pitch. Germany was the runner-up at last summer’s European Championships, which makes the win all the more impressive. Read the full story

After five unproductive years in charge of Norway’s national football team, coach Aage Hareide has decided to call it quits, saying he’s exhausted and hasn’t achieved any notable results on the world arena. The final straw seems to have been Hareide’s inability to put together a squad that can win a match in the qualifying rounds for 2010’s World Cup. Read the full story
