War criminal reportedly surfaces in Oslo

Norwegian police officerAccording to reports in Aftenposten, a man who is wanted in conjunction with the Rwandan genocide may be in hiding in Oslo. Felicien Kabuga, is accused of helping to finance the genocide in Rwanda and has been on the run for the last 14 years.

The wealthy businessman is rumoured to want to turn himself in and cease his life on the run. According to some reports, he drove over the border into Norway from Sweden and has been staying in a flat in Oslo for the past two months.

Sammy Kipterer Korir, the editor of the African Press International (API), a newspaper based in Norway, says he was invited into a hotel room in Oslo to interview Kabuga.

The API report indicates the now aging Kabuga wants to return to his native land before he is too old to do so. Kabuga is now 72 years old. Rwandan officials have refused to negotiate with the man and some reports indicate he may try to seek asylum in Norway.

A warrant for Kabua’s arrest was issued by a United Nations tribunal in 1999.

Some officials at the tribunal and other diplomats believe this latest report of Kabuga’s location is a hoax.
