Swedish politician gets elected, only then reads party manifesto


Eric Gerhardsson, who was elected into the municipal council in Gallivare in Sunday’s Swedish parliamentary and local elections will abandon his party and his seat in the council. Gerhardsson was on the list for the extreme right party Sverigedemokraterna (the Sweden Democrats) but now claims that after having actually read through the party’s manifesto he feels that he has no choice but to leave, Dagens Nyheter reports. Protests over Swedish far-right party election gains


Thousands of people have taken to the streets of Stockholm to protest against the election to parliament of 20 far-right party members. The Sweden Democrats, who are against immigration and have been accused of racism, claimed 5.7 percent of the vote in Sunday’s elections, denying Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt’s centre-right Alliance a clear majority. Danish racism report ‘obscures’ full picture


An anti-racism group in Denmark has criticised the government’s latest progress report to the UN, saying it is glossing over the country’s ongoing race issues.
