For the first time in years, Copenhagen’s public transport network has experienced an increase in passengers. This is a sharp turnaround from the previous six years in which passenger numbers steadily dropped. But the Copenhagen Post reports that in 2008 there were an impressive 6.2 million more passengers using the capital’s public transport than in 2007. Read the full story

A flashy new fleet of bright yellow electric minibuses has hit the narrow inner streets of Copenhagen to provide an eco-friendly form of transport in this historic city. Finnish Railways (VR) announced last week that it will be upgrading its existing rail link between the capital Helsinki and Russia’s St Petersburg. The new high-speed service, which is named Allegro, will begin operations in 2010. Read the full story

The Danish government is considering investing 90 billion kroner in public transport over the next decade, with a particular focus on high-speed trains. The goal is to get up to 20 percent of car drivers off the roads and into some form of public transport, ideally trains, according to an unreleased government report obtained by Berlingske Tidende newspaper. In a sign of things to come for public Internet use, Denmark’s largest bus and train operator Arriva Scandinavia AB, is now offering free broadband Internet service to anyone riding on certain bus routes in Copenhagen. Its initial effort involves 23 buses on two routes equipped with UK-based Meshhopper’s Multimesh mobile broadband gateway that will enable those with a compatible 3G mobile phone or laptop to get online while onboard. Volvo, the Swedish auto-making legend, has released the world’s first commercial hybrid bus. The Volvo 7700 has both a traditional diesel engine and an electric motor which should use 30 percent less fuel than other buses in operation today. The new hybrid will make its debut on the streets of London and Gothenburg this autumn.
