Market gardeners in Iceland distributed vegetables outside parliament yesterday as part of their protest at the high cost of electricity. The protest was timed to coincide with a parliamentary debate about greenhouse farmers and the increasing cost of electricity. Read the full story

A group of people broke away from the crowd of protesters this afternoon and tried to break into the Parliament building. Two police officers stopped the small group from entering. Drumming and whistling could be heard from the protesters inside the Parliament. Read the full story

Icelandic Prime Minister Geir H. Haarde again reiterated yesterday that the time for new elections in Iceland has not yet come. In his opinion, calling elections now would leave the country without effective government while the vote is prepared; and that would not be in the national interest. He would, however, not rule out elections as early as next winter. Read the full story

The Icelandic parliament, Althingi, convened for the first time today since Christmas – and over 2,000 angry protesters surrounded the building using drums, horns, pans and simple clapping to ask for new elections.
The atmosphere was tense, inside the chamber and outside, as the Left Green Party reiterated its support for the protesters. Several Green MPs used the recess periods to go outside and join the protest. Read the full story
