The Icelandic Parliament, Althingi, convened today to debate a Government bill regarding the preparation for a national referendum on the so-called Icesave legislation. This comes in the wake of the President of Iceland´s decision on 5 January not to sign into law a bill which provides for a state guarantee of loan repayments to the British and Dutch governments. According to Article 26 of the Constitution, a national referendum must take place should the President not sign a bill into law. Read the full story

It’s the same name but a new face on the Danish prime minister, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, who has taken over the country’s top position from Anders Fogh Rasmussen, who stepped down to run for the top NATO spot. The two men may share the same surname, but their pasts couldn’t be more different.
Lars Lokke Rasmussen was once wanted for murder by Interpol. But that was just a misunderstanding resulting from his charity work establishing schools in Afghanistan in 1988. The Copenhagen Post reports that as a young man Rasmussen founded Operation Skoleprojekt to funnel money to the Mujahideen to establish schools in their Soviet-occupied nation. Read the full story

A regular medical examination which I underwent at the National and University Hospital last week revealed a small tumour of the oesophagus. On Tuesday I was informed that a biopsy had indicated that the tumour was malignant. My physicians have advised me to immediately undergo surgery to remove the tumour but as the operation concerned cannot be carried out here in Iceland, it will be carried out abroad around the end of this month or shortly thereafter. The Icelandic artist Snorri Asmundsson has taken the decision to put himself forward for the leadership of the Independence Party at the national conference beginning 29th January.
The current Independence Party leader is Prime Minister Geir H. Haarde, who has not expressed a wish to resign his position and has not invited candidates for a leadership vote. Read the full story
