Police have taken a helicopter to the hamlet of Nutaarmiut, about 90km from Upernavik in west central Greenland.

“We have been informed by a citizen that three people have been shot and killed in Nutaarmiut and two people are said to be injured,” Claus Risbjerg of the Greenland Central Police Authority said in a Politken report.

Nutaarmiut is home to around 55 people and is one of many small hunting communities in the country that does not have a permanent police presence.

“We have no information on who did this. We have a helicopter due to land up there soon with police, a doctor and nurses. When we have our people on the scene, we will have further information,” Risbjerg said.

The man, who was described as being in a strange state, took himself to the police station yesterday and told officers about an incident which had taken place at his home in Hafnarfjörður.

His explanation was extremely unclear so police decided to visit the house. Once there they discovered a woman in her thirties, already dead at the scene and with visible injuries.

The woman was in the man’s home as an invited guest and they had known one another for some time, Vísir.is reports. Police officers took a blade from the scene as evidence. The man in custody was previously known to the police.

The investigation into the apparent murder is at a very early stage and not a lot of information is yet available, according to the police press release.

Police want to battle the growing trend of citizens tipping off news outlets in return for rewards, by providing better information services to the media themselves, according to the Keskisuomalainen newspaper.

“Citizens often first report a disturbance to the media or put a video up on YouTube before they even think that maybe they should inform the authorities,” Inspector Tuomo Korhonen of the Central Finland police told Keskisuomalainen.

In an effort to get back in the loop, officers asked journalists for feedback on their communication skills and were told that they are somewhat non-responsive in fast-breaking situations.

In a bid to ensure that information is made more readily available to the media, three new communication units are now being set up within the force. Videos, photos and reports will soon be posted onto police websites by the new units, making the information available to journalists worldwide.

There are also plans to post real-time updates on crimes and emergencies via social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook. The plans will be finalised and announced by the national police administration by the beginning of March.

Icelandic police are searching for a man (pictured) and a white Renault Kangoo van in connection to their investigation into the explosion and bomb which were found in central Reykjavík on Tuesday.

The bomb, which was destroyed in a controlled explosion, did not turn out to contain high explosives; but was designed to look like it did and to cause disruption. The explosion outside the IMF office and next to the Prime Minister’s office is also being taken seriously. Police say the explosion at arond 06.00 was a danger to safety and was much more than just fireworks.

Investigators are still combing through CCTV footage from Hverfisagata and nearby streets and several tip-offs have reportedly been received.

Nobody has yet been arrested and the explosion and device are still being investigated. An eyewitness described the man police are looking for as short and fat.

Meanwhile Ögmundur Jónasson, Minister of the Interior, has criticised the police for what he calls their slow reaction and the too-slow pace of their investigation so far. He intends to meet with police chiefs.

A suspicious box was found early this morning at the corner or Hverfisgata in Reykjavík — just outside the country’s Prime Ministry. A bomb disposal robot blew the package up and others are being searched for.

A section of the street near to the Prime Minister’s office remains cordoned off; although following the controlled explosion reporters have been allowed nearer as the danger level is believed to have dropped.

Bomb disposal teams from the police and the coastguard jointly disposed of the package in a controlled explosion. The package was found at 06.00. At around that time a security guard at the Prime Ministry reports hearing a bang.

Other people nearby also report hearing a loud bang, Vísir.is reports. It appears that pictures or placards with political messages were stuck to the outside of the Prime Ministry this morning just before the bang was heard and before the package was discovered. Similar placards were also put outside the Ministry of the Interior.

Police decided then to search for suspicious objects in other nearby government ministries, but none were found. A cabinet meeting has been allowed to proceed inside the Prime Ministry as police now believe the area to be safe.

UPDATE: The latest news is that the building next to the Prime Ministry where the package was found and destroyed is the Icelandic base of the IMF and that police were not only reacting to a suspicious box, but to a suspicious item inside the suspicious box.

A series on bunny burglaries in a western Swedish town has left pet owners blaming the media for encouraging copycat kidnappings.

As many as nine rabbits disappeared from garden hutches in Säffle in a week over the New Year period, while another two were reported missing last weekend.

“It’s been 14 days now, and I still hope to see Molly again,” Diana Strömsmoen, whose long-eared friend was among the first to go missing, told The Local. “But I don’t think I ever will.”

“We went out in the snow with torches to feed her, but she wasn’t there,” she said. “The whole family was upset and I put up pictures in the local supermarkets and flyers in the neighbours’ letterboxes. It wasn’t long before I got a response, but they weren’t ringing about Molly – the neighbours had lost one too!”

Police admit that they are scratching their heads over the rabbit snatching, but say they are keeping their ears to the ground. “It’s impossible to solve when we don’t have anything to go on,” Hasse Ericson of the Säffle police told the Aftonbladet.

The local media reported the story in the hope of increasing pet-owner vigilance and deterring the thieves, but many believe the publicity may have encouraged copycat kidnappings. Police are warning residents to secure hutches at night, which is when the animals are disappearing.

“I have so many theories about what happened to Molly. At first I thought an animal took her, or that she escaped,” Strömsmoen said. “But the cage door was shut, so I feel like she must have been stolen.”

Egill Einarsson, otherwise known as Gillz, is accused of having raped a young girl late last year and following a police investigation the case has now been passed on to the state prosecutor.

It was reported on 2nd December that Egill and his fiancée had been accused of a sexual crime against the girl. On the same day Egill strongly denied the accusation in a press release, where he said that he was going to sue the girl for her false accusations.

Since then the case has been under investigation by Reykjavík police, but according to the office of the state prosecutor, the case was transferred there yesterday, Vísir.is reported.

Among Gillz’s more conspicuous roles is as the shirtless cover boy on the current edition of the Icelandic phone directory (which features all sorts of different themes from year to year). However, the phone book was removed from circulation in December when the accusations were made public.

Reykjavík police this morning released details of two raids on premises last night where they found that cannabis plants were being grown.

The drugs operation was discovered in the east of the city. The police confiscated the plants and arrested four people in connection.

In both cases the plants were being grown in residential blocks. In one of the flats police found 70 cannabis plants, as well as an array of cosmetics which police believe were stolen, Vísir.is reports.

It was at the first address that police officers found clues leading them to the second address, where 18 cannabis plants were found. Two were arrested at each location and both are previously known to police.

Police sources say they are increasingly worried about cannabis production in residential buildings because of the fire risk. They say moisture from the plants can short circuit electrics, causing a fire – as has apparently happened recently.

The Icelandic police are extremely serious about drugs and raids such as this happen very regularly and always make the local headlines. Sometimes they find only two or three plants; but suspects are arrested nevertheless. What is noteworthy about this case is that the suspects were all named as being of Asian origin.

The drugs package, which contained a large number of ecstasy tablets, as well as cocaine, amphetamines and steroids, was sent to a small company in the Icelandic capital last October. The older suspect works for the company in question; but according to Vísir.is sources, he has never come to police attention before. The same anonymous sources say he believes he was tricked into the crime; saying that he was only asked to get a package containing steroids into the country unnoticed. He claims all the other drugs came as a complete surprise.

The police investigation was very big and was very labour intensive for several weeks leading up to the two men’s arrests.

The drugs were found at the port of Straumsvík (primarily used by the adjoining aluminium smelter) near Hafnarfjörður, in the Reykjavík region. The drugs were found in several packages on board the Dutch container ship, Francisca. The ship arrived in Iceland from Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

Police in the Westfjords of Iceland are investigating the brutal ‘murder’ of a dog in the town of Þingeyri. Suspect(s) have been interviewed and townspeople are still in shock.

The police are not yet willing to reveal any details in the case and appear to have little information to go on.

DV first reported on the case after the black dog’s body was found in Þingeyri harbour on Thursday. The dog’s feet had been bound together and he had been tied to two car wheels, which floated due to the air in the tyres. It seems the criminal(s) had no aversion to the body being discovered.

Many residents of the town of Þingeyri are very upset at the highly unusual and particularly heartless killing and a memorial service was held at the harbourside on Saturday. Floating candles were released into the sea.

According to DV sources the Westfjords police instantly came up with at least one suspect and took a statement from the individual or individuals right away on Thursday evening after the crime was reported.

Despite the media buzz around the event, police are keeping tight lipped and little more is known at this stage.
