(UPDATED) The crew of a fishing boat have reported seeing a polar bear at Haeluvik on the Hornstrandir peninsula in Iceland’s Westfjords region this morning. The Icelandic Coastguard is preparing to send a helicopter to search for the bear. Read the full story

The mayor of Reykjavik, Jon Gnarr has declared that Iceland should take more care to rehabilitate visitors from overseas than to shoot them. This, even though the visitors in question are the biggest and most dangerous land predators anywhere: hungry and dangerous polar bears stranded many hundreds of kilometres from home. Several group of hikers travelling around the Hornstrandir area in Iceland reported seeing two “white spots” in the mountain hills, spots that weren’t there when they travelled the same path back.
The local authorities in cooperation with the Icelandic cost guard are on the look-out and have asked all hiking groups to return to base. According to Kristinu Volundadottir, the local district commissioner at Isafjordur, all groups had been reported back except for one that authorities have been trying to contact and brief of the situation.

A second polar bear, which was found roaming in Northern Iceland yesterday, has been shot. Stefan Vagn Stefansson, police chief from Saudarkrokur, said the polar bear had bolted towards the sea and they were left with “no choice but to shoot it”, reports mbl.is
The polar bear is reported to be an adult female. It is the second sighting of a polar bear in Iceland in a month and follows the shooting of an adult male in the same area on June 3rd.
