A Somali pirate has admitted hijacking a Danish ship in the Gulf of Aden, in what could be a major breakthrough in attempts to bring such cases to justice. A new poll suggests that the upstart Pirate Party could secure its first-ever seats in Sweden’s Riksdag if they continue to attract youthful voters. A survey published in the Aftonbladet newspaper gave the Pirate Party 4.2 per cent of the electorate, which would be enough support to win seats in the Riksdag in a general election. The Danish naval ship, HMS Absalon, is facing an unusual dilemma with the five Somali pirates it pulled out of the Gulf of Aden on 2 January. The pirates’ ship was reportedly sunk by the very cargo vessel they were trying to attack when an emergency flare landed on the pirates’ boat and sank it. Read the full story

The Gulf of Aden, off the African nation of Somalia, is notorious for being one of the most pirate-infested regions of the world. Within a three day period recently, pirates attacked ships off the coast of Somalia four times, but were chased off each time by the Danish Royal navy.
