A parliamentary resolution on the forming of a constitutional council has passed Iceland’s Althingi parliament. The council will be held instead of a constitutional parliament, because the public election result was voided by the Supreme Court. Read the full story

Jon Gunnarsson, an Icelandic MP for the Independence Party, made a mistake when voting on the government bill on the constitutional assembly which took place on 16th June. He was the only Independence Party MP in Althingi who voted yes. Read the full story

Immigrants living in Finland will be able to vote for 50 representatives to the world’s first ‘immigrant Parliament’ at next year’s elections. The body planning the polls have no official status in Finland but are hoping to give immigrants a voice and influence public opinion surrounding the issue. Read the full story

The Icelandic Parliament, Althingi, convened today to debate a Government bill regarding the preparation for a national referendum on the so-called Icesave legislation. This comes in the wake of the President of Iceland´s decision on 5 January not to sign into law a bill which provides for a state guarantee of loan repayments to the British and Dutch governments. According to Article 26 of the Constitution, a national referendum must take place should the President not sign a bill into law. Read the full story

The Icelandic parliament is in turmoil in the third and final debate over Icesave. The parliament’s Budget Committee received last minute communications from British solicitors Mishcon de Reya indicating that they are in possession of important documents that the parliament should familiarise themselves with before making the final decision on the Icesave-bill.
