An experiment currently underway in Greenland is trying to learn about the effect of glaciers on bedrock. This project has been organised and funded by global nuclear power companies who are planning to create a final storage facility for their radioactive nuclear waste hundreds of metres underground in bedrock caverns. Sweden’s national security service, Sapo, has issued a warning that Iranian citizens studying at Swedish universities could have ties to their nation’s nuclear and military establishments. Therefore, the government agency has advised Swedish universities to ban all Iranian nationals from studying in any field with connections to these weapon-based sectors. Read the full story

There are several types of mushrooms in Finland these days which are still affected by the Chernobyl nuclear meltdown incident. These mushrooms are still radioactive even 23 years since the Ukrainian power plant incident. The EU states that mushrooms should not contain more than 600 Becquerels (bq) of radiation per kg. Half a kilometre beneath the Swedish town of Oskarshamn is the Aespoe Hard Rock Laboratory, an underground maze of tunnels running four kilometres through granite rock. Nordic foreign ministers have spoken out in condemnation of North Korea’s Sunday nuclear weapons test on home soil.
Ossur Skarphedinsson, Iceland’s foreign Minister said that the Icelandic government is unsympathetic towards all use of nuclear weapons and has been working to reduce their use globally. Read the full story

The Finnish Nuclear and Radiation Safety Authority (STUK) has sent a letter to Areva, the French company building the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant, stating that they will shut down the power station site if Areva doesn’t fix problems in the plant’s automation systems. Read the full story
